research

This is sort of what i want mine to be with me doing it and showing how it is done but then showing the final product and this is what i want mine to come out like. These videos have helped me very much because in these screen shots from the video i liked how it showed you what to do and how to do it because it showed what sort of surrounding i would want and how they look around miniatures and weather they would be appropriate to look with my miniatures which helped me very much because it told me what sort of thing i want to recreate and how and where to find it so that it look appropriate and accurate. It helped me by showing me what sort of lighting surroundings and shot type as well as how tight of a shot that i am going to need to be taking my shots and by telling me this and letting me see this it helps me massively rather than just telling me what i have to do.I got this form it this video and it very helpful and useful for the things that i have just listed and it was very useful.

This is the lighting that i would use to get certain effects with the picture or add effects fro lightsabers or passing effects or to set a tone and scene.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/fullnilson/15278792462/in/photostream/

I have looked at these types of videos and picture explaining the art of photography and how to get to get certain effects such as smoke rain water explosions and fire by using fire cracker smoke grenades and other items so make certain effects and i want to show these in my final piece to show it as a tutorial video as well as i look at these because they have the inspirational aspect as well as they help to learn to get the effects that i want as well as show me how my final video should look like with what equipment i am going to use it as well as it is very helpful to see the positioning of characters and the depth of field to get certain things in and out of focus.

They typically use a i would use a canon dslr + 50mm lens to take my pictures

Image result for canon dslr + 50mm lens

Which is what they should have to get the best effect and depth of field.

I have looked at the lighting techniques as well as set them up my self and practised it such as i have these key points and techniques.

6 Secret Photography Lighting Techniques For Capturing A Good Photo
  • Split Lighting. Split lighting is a technique where the subject's face is somewhat divided into equal halves (one appearing on the light and the other in the shadow). ...
  • Butterfly lighting
  • Loop lighting
  • Rembrandt lighting
  • Short lighting
  • Broad lighting

As well as this is what i looked tried to make mine like and i experimented to make mine look like as well as i have tried and experimented with jells to give a desired coloured effect from the lighting give a tone and mood to your piece with a piece of colour transparent material to transmit the light colour these were very helpful to look at because it helped me learn how to set up my equipment and how the equipment should have looked and how effective that it should have been and how the lighting should have been used.

My idea slightly changed
My idea changed from lego to airfix due to the fact that in my opinion lego did not look good on camera compared to my airfix it might have been the way that i was doing it but in my opinion it was not the best or at least it could have been better. which with experience they could of been better but i was happy with what i produced .

I have also done some images which reminded me of scenes from some of my most loved films such as the dirty dozen when 4 members of the squad are sprinting down a hill with an artillery barrage exploding behind them.
Image result for dirty dozen war film

This was unintentional but i am happy that it has that relevance because the dirty dozen is one of the best films of all time and this scene was quite funny and one the more iconic scenes in the film and the fact that the film is so well known and loved making my pieces more recognisable a d helps with my target audience due tot he fact that younger kids would have seen this and so would have an older age interested in the production of it but its such a wide spread film that it would be recognisable is compared to each other but it still has action drama and tension in it which is what the kids would see which making it appeal to them but i think that it was a nice coincidence as well as there was another one which after a bit of editing i noticed
i thought that a black and white filter if added would like a commando raid form the desert rats .

As well as with my pacific themed picture reminded me of a scene from wind talkers when the american are rushing the Japanese defences.

Peer Feedback

In my first try my first set of feedback to make sure that my focusing is on the main subject and in the correct area that the picture focuses on the main protagonist of the picture as well as making sure that my pictures are a lot tighter so that i am making sure that i am not wasting space and making it more consecrated on the character.

target audience

Age : There are 2 main types of people such as i would have a younger age group for the toys which would be aged between 10 and 15 and for the older age group interested in photography would be 17 to 21.

Gender : Male

Demographic :location norfolk living in a 3 bedroom detached house as well as working as an advertiser

Psycho-graphic :my target audiences interests and hobby's would be films and tv as well as i think they would obviously interested in photography

Behavioural: active and patient as well as passionate

Lifestyle (aio)  for a lifestyle they would be go out watch football on the weekend as well as practising photography and using and experimenting with his equipment as well as  probably working in media or more likely in advertisement

Displaying

My display i would print them in full colour at the size of ( image bellow ) which is the typical size of a picture that would be displayed in a gallery as well as they would be displayed in frames that would look like they would be either from the 1940s and 50s. As well as they could look like they are batted and damaged as well as looking like they are being shot at or battered depending on weather it is an action shot or whether it is a still of figures in there surroundings and i did think that they could be displayed in a local gallery such as the wells malting handa gallery or some of the other ones i found as well as i would want to have some dividers placed around to break up the room and give it some more angels to make it more interesting than a normal gallerY.

I have also been looking at the original pieces of ww2 and Vietnam war photographers such as John FordWilliam WylerJohn HustonFrank Capra and George Stevens and i have been looking at the message and what the photographer is trying to portray and tell us with what he is showing us from his experience such as in world war 2 the picture which were shown were meant to show patriotism and a sense of comradery. And wanting make war look exiting and important rather than the chaotic mess that it actually was and this has helped me massively with my shot composition and with the messages that i have portrayed because it has inspired me wanting to make the same message. As well as showing interesting action and visuals but with an important message which covers different scenarios through out the entire war as well as looking at the Vietnam and Crimean war photography because these portray different messages because these show the more realistic and horrific side of war. And how it was for a soldier and a civilian as well as showing what people were actually getting in for and actually persuading people to turn away and rethink there choices which is one of the things that i want to portray which is an even balance between showing action and comradery and a realistic realism showing people the reality of war but not dispersing them from the idea that war was a nice and exciting thing. like these pictures.

Image result for vietnam war photographyImage result for vietnam war photography These were pictures from the Vietnam war and these show the horror and the harsh terrain and resolve of war and what it can do to you and the people around you and it is this sort of realism and authenticity that i want to show but to such a dark level whilst showing that war was a bonding experience and that it was a time to bond learn and grow as people

There are also other ways to create and explore other works that these artists have created such as a netfilx documentary series that depict there experiences and other things that they have seen and felt during there job and showing it to us through the use of photography helping me understand and furthering my point in this as well as

these are some war time picture that have shown some of the main things that i want to show Such as Related image in this picture it shows the harsh reality of war showing this guys friend or foe dead on the floor informant of him as well as his looking concerned and worried as well as it shows the fact that he is brave and strong to still be there. Showing that he is brave for still being next to a spot where some one was killed or even braver knowing that he has killed him and knowing that he has to live with that showing both side of the coin and both sides of my argument showing what i want to portray. As well as that this picture Related imageShows that they have bonded and are trusting each other as well as having great drama and action its shows trust and comradery as well as trust taking away from the horror that in the background there are being shelled and shot at . As well as being potential showing both sides in a grate picture and composition these are things that i want to recreate and show in my pieces and showing both areas and reactions of war in photography helping me with inspiration and developing my idea and helping to see what a good and gritty as well as potential emotional picture should look like and show.

photographic research and experimentation

Focusing points

The skills that  i have used when creating certain my photography in my shooting i have used focusing points on my figures face which focus the area that you select which would be the figure as well as having a slight depth of field focusing the thing that is int he area of the focusing point selected as well as having everything else around it out of focus making out concentrate on what you want them to be focusing

composition

Also i have been making all of my shots a lot tighter to make sure that you are capturing what you want and not having as much wasted space but according to my second load of peer feedback they could do with being tighter to properly make sure i am capturing what i want to and how i want it to feel and i think that i have made it tighter but it still just needs a bit more but because ti is not much i could still do it in premier and i would not loose the quality as an option if it does not improve by the end of my next and probably final shoot

Feel and tone

Which leads me into the digital adjustments that i have made in Photoshop because i have been asked to give my pictures a gritty and more realistic tone as well as being told that my shots were to bright and not accurate enough to make them not look like toys which in this circumstance is very important to get the feeling that i am looking for but still letting them be toys with just a gritty realistic

Adjustments

Fury and saving private Ryan were my main inspiration for the editing to get them to the right colour and tone that i want them to get to and to do this i have added a brightness and contrast layer as well as having a hue and saturation layer added to get the tone that i want as well as having a full light brown layer over the top with a soft light added to blend it in and  enhance the colours that i want to give it the feel tone and realism i was looking for.

Camera techniques
What gear and how to use effectively and location

The equipment that i used is a canon 7d with a canon 70-200f4 usm lens which were very effective because they allowed me to get very close and get slot better tighter and bette
clearer pictures in better surroundings with a better tone and feeling to them giving it the effect and realism which was also mainly thank to the location which helped it look like as well as to get that feeling i used a small bean bag to rest the camera on to keep it stable and close to the ground to get better shot compositions

how they look and how i develop them / aesthetics

The picture look brilliant int he surroundings that they are placed in because everything is in proportion and they have  a darker tone and realism to them after some Photoshop adjustments but that makes them work properly and it make them not look like toy which as i have stated is very important and it is very important to give them the right colours and tone to make them feel the way they should be so that it looks time periodically accurate which as muddy wet location which we found helps to give it this feeling and makes it look realistic

Mat peer feedback

I showed Tom how to set up the camera and the different focal range of the lens. We tried a couple of lenses and decided that the 70-200 lens would be perfect for this shoot. It gave Tom a better range to shoot the figures and make them look realistic. We set the camera up on a bean bag so the camera was level with the subject this makes all the difference being level with the subject rather than looking down on them. Tom did well on this test shoot independently and got some good results. Tom learnt a lot from this shoot and will use this on his next shoot and help with confidence,

equipment
Image result for canon 70-200f4 usm lens

In my second shoot i used these settings to help me get my pictures to the level they are i also used these settings in my other shoots but just didn't record or share it but i used a canon 7d with a canon 70-200f4 usm lens to take my picture with these settings i used a av (aperture value) of f 4.5 which allowed the main thing that i wanted inside of the frame and what my focus point is concentrated on whilst having everything in front and behind of the figure out of focus allowing a nice depth of field then moving to an f 5.6 with the later shots. As well as having auto focusing as well as having utilising focusing points which are a series of boxes in the view finder and screen which you move and adjust with the wheel so that you choose what are of the frame you want to have focus whilst leaving every thing else out of focus there are also other optional selections to this where you can have multiply things in focus instead of just selecting certain just selecting on specific area.
Image result for dslr autofocus points

This is also the set up that i had with in the area that i took my pictures which were the gardens just outside the building in both shoots which is what you see in the pictures bellow because i used a blanket lied out on the . Other wise you could potential loose things as well as saving your knees and clothes from the environment  as well as placing the camera on a small bean bag in the ground to keep the camera steady as well as having it low enough to the ground to get straight on pictures that work very well as well as  it looks like the top picture in these picture.

I have found a war photographer that i really liked. His work for because it has a dark theme and it shows the realism and harshness of the Vietnam war and his name is Philip Jones Griffiths , who was a war photographer during the Vietnam war and his work capturing the horror of the war.

These picture have helped me by telling me what sort of composition i would need and what sort of effect i should be getting from these picture . As well as the sort of feelings that people should feel which i have taken on board by looking at these pictures and seeing what works and what dose not and how i can use what does in my work to draw an emotion whilst giving them a darker and more meaning full message . I have not tried to replicate that i my work because that is not my idea to have a pile of depressing picture but i have still used some of what i have learnt to help my pictures feel more serious . Such as the one on the bottom right . As well as my peer feedback told me to get my shots tighter and after looking at these in my third shoot i plan on trying to get my shots tighter so that i can create tension drama and a deep emotion out of my picture.

I have also looked at moises saman because some of his pictures have made me think . And i saw a lot of things in his pictures that i wanted to put inside of mine such as i saw in this picture the colour and tone of the picture it has a lot of dark colours and the tone is very courageous and serious as well as having a very kind and brave feel about the picture such as the people in these pictures as well as the figures in my pictures to be apart of a brotherhood. Such as one that you would have adopted when you enlist like these men and the ones in my pictures are willing to do what it takes to take care of all there friends and stay in that brotherhood .

I have had a look at these images as well to help me and to help develop my idea and project . Having looking at these they have helped very much with my project because they show many things which i want to with in mine such as the shot composition which for me is the place that it needs to be and it is perfect also having brilliant action and drama with in these shots which also show emotion which i want to recreate . I wanted to recreate the drama and the action in these pictures which are very good because it is clear whats going on what is meant to be focused on as well as having told the audience a story and letting there imagination spread with these which is what i want to capture in my pieces . All of these pieces of research in to other artists and seeing there pictures inspires me and  help me improve what i can and with what i want to capture and how if it was successful it would look.

I have printed out a selection of my final pieces and i have  gathered some peer feedback on them so that i have a good idea of what my audience would want so that  i can improve and change my pieces so that i have a good idea of what i am doing is right for my audience as well as having a good idea of what needs improvement. these are the notes that my audience wrote to help me improve my pictures and fmp . Such as Alex suggested that i think about how much blur and depth of field that i use when taking my pictures as well as when taking or editing them i consider the rule of thirds which is completely fair so far as well as having been told by Nathan that i should think about my shot composition and how tight that i am getting and how it would look if is was any tighter and judge of that.

Website - In my fmp i managed to transfer all of my work into a functioning website to display and show all of my work that i have done so if people are not able to turn up at my gallery display then there alternate ways for people to view my work as well as it is a good way to show my work in a commercial way fort hem to be available for them to be used in advertisement . which i have considered and turned some of my picture in to the different variations of airfix box art that there have been over the years. As well as for my website to get the effects that i would have wanted i looked at other free lance photographer websites such as Colin Prior who is a free lance photographer who focuses in doing landscape photography and i looked at the structure of his website and how the website rather than some of the content because our topics are not the same mine is toy photography and he is a landscape photography so i looked at how the website worked and the flow of this page and i used some of the things he has and incorporated them into my website such as the pages he uses ( about blogs and corporate pages ) which i liked and i looked at them and what was in these pages and these taught me what content i would need and the things that i would need to do if i was to do a about page and what sort of things you need to show to help relate your audience to you such as name age and more personal info as well as picture to give your audience a good idea about you what you do and what your intentions are  as well as the other main page that i looked at but did not manage to incorporate into my website with in time was the corporate page which is the page which he talks about his company what it does and weather anybody would want to collaborate with him and telling us a good amount about his back story making us connect more with him but if i managed to include this in mine i would have talked about my production company ( Fletcher Films ) and giving a good amount about how it was created and my intentions for the company and where i see it going and offering out collaborations to help expand my company which is some thing i learnt from colins website and i thought about it more i realised how important it was and if i had enough time i would have incorporated

as well as i looked at another website which was the main thing i inspired from because it had a nice layout and flow /  system with in it and it looked like what i wanted it to be and what i wanted mine to look at and the website was for Aston Martin by Rankin film which is a free lance photographer for Aston martin who i came across through google but searching free lance photographers and i really like his website and learnt a lot about how i wanted mine to look and what content i wanted in mine and this website was perfect for some of the main things that i wanted such as a large main picture as a centre page to demonstrate what sort of work that you can do which i liked and decided to recreate in my own website . I also liked the user flow of this website so i used the website more and more and i saw how it worker and after i learn that i used certain things from it such as the small logo in the top left as a way of showing of your company logo and as a way to navigate back to the main home page as well as i liked how clean the website was there is no chunky text or out of place menus everything is very minimalistic and clean so it easy to navigate and move around to get to the page which you want to get to and i have incorporated this in mine because i want my website to be easy to navigate so i decided to use this method. i have also looked at all of the other tabs in this website and i liked how they looked and what content was on these pages and i liked what i saw because i t was what you needed showing what work you do and who you have worked with as well as basic contact info as well as a good amount of info about the person and what they do . This is the info that you will need on a website and i learnt how important some of these tabs was and i have decided to make some of them and use some of this information modified so that it has a professional and personal feel to it .

  1. Find war photographers and photographs that you find inspiring and then find journals and books quoting the analysis of these images. It is in this analysis that you will find the advice that you need to frame your photographs for your FMP. e.g. Nick Ut , Napalm Girl... cite an analysis of the image and then write in your planning how you use this new knowledge of image analysis.

  2. This has progressed from last week. Well done, Tom. You have explored war photography in some detail. Read through your writing... You really must use full stops and check the grammar and spelling ('goo' and not 'good'). Have a peer check with you and comment. Please reply to these posts with questions and/or post with a checklist of what you have completed. Today... SHOOT!

  3. in your research i can see that you a very pasionate in doing this project which you have given alot of research about the war and what goes behind the shooting of the pictures and its good that you have clips and photos and feed back from your peers and the questionnaire as well.

  4. This page needs more organisation, at the moment if feels chaotic and hard to understand. Firstly, proof read the whole thing and ensure that the points you are making are clear.
Then i recommend you separate each source into headings and clearly discuss what you researched (e.g. Photographer Captures Toys In Action Shots youtube video) what you learnt from researching it (e.g. techniques to photograph toys) and how that has helped (or not helped) your project (e.g. this has given you the idea to photograph your toys in a woodland area to simulate the mise-en-scene of a European battleground)

Do this for EVERY source of information you have used, then list them in a bibliography at the end of the page. Do so in the Harvard System, refer to your notes from class or ask a peer if you need refreshing on this process.

  5. There is no evidence or research on websites, what has influenced your design decisions reading, examples of professional work and comparing it to your website is essential. Look at the designs of the freelance photography websites. There is so much research on the piece that you are creating, but there is little to no work done. Focus on the practical the same as on the research. Please proof read your text, use full stops. Your research feels like one long text. Write about how the surveys and questions has helped develop your idea and your piece.
